Pupils compete for a place in SA Athletics

RUIMSIG –15 districts, 1200 schools and 1800 athletes compete for the top two places in order to qualify for the SA Championships in PE.

The Gauteng Primary School Athletics Championship took place at the Roodepoort Athletics Stadium in Ruimsig on 26 and 27 February. The championship was hosted in conjunction with the Education and Sport and Recreation departments and provided athletes the opportunity to be chosen for the team that will represent Gauteng at the South African Primary School Athletics championship in Port Elizabeth on 11 and 12 March.

A total of 15 districts and 1200 schools around Gauteng came together to participate in the championship. According to Patrick Mashige, the district sport coordinator and chairman of the local organising committee, the two top performers in each event qualified to represent Gauteng in the SA Championship next weekend. “About 180 athletes were chosen from schools all over Gauteng,” said Mashige.

He said that it was the first time that Johannesburg North hosted the championships. “It was challenging as it was the first time we hosted this event. It was a learning experience for us, but we managed to pull through.” Mashige thanked the departments involved for their support. He added that educators from the schools and the parents of the athletes were also a great support.
