Suffer or clean up?

RUIMSIG – Residents and business owners do not take the time to clean out stones and sand from driveways – debris which is washed up onto the road during heavy rain.

A resident from Ruimsig Alex Welsh is concerned about the state of the roads in Ruimsig and Poortview.

“The roads have been in an atrocious state for almost two months now,” said Welsh. This is due to the severe rainstorms since December. Piles of sand, stone and rock are still lying in the roads. He said that sadly very few residents, businesses or complexes in the affected areas take the time to clean the short stretch in front of their own properties, and they would rather continue driving through the rubble day after day.

“This will only get worse when it rains heavily again and it will become a permanent feature of those roads,” said Welsh.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) operations manager, marketing and communications, Bertha Peters-Scheepers said, “JRA’s Region C team will investigate the condition of roads in Ruimsig resulting from the recent floods and will schedule the repairs accordingly.” JRA sincerely apologises for the delay in service and they encourage the escalation of all reported issues with a reference number to their email address hotline@jra.org.za.

Ward Councillor 97 Jaco Engelbrecht said that he has not received any queries from residents about the roads, “If the residents have the means to remove the pile-up of sand and stones in their driveways they can do so, it will be quicker than the wait.” He did, however, say that he will follow up the matter with JRA.
