Dangerous intersection?

CONSTANTIA KLOOF – The intersection will receive a geometric upgrade within this financial year.

Accidents and high speed on Jim Fouché Road and Constantia Drive in Constantia Kloof are a vast challenge.

This busy intersection only has stop signs on Constantia Drive and Wilhelmina Avenue, which means that motorists driving on Jim Fouché do not stop at the intersection.

The traffic volume has also increased due to motorists driving out of the Constantia Kloof Total Petrol Station.

Ward 85 Councillor Carl Mann said they sent a report to the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) two months ago about this intersection.

He explained that he asked one of the residents who lives close to the intersection to get the community together and write a petition that would be sent to the JRA.

“We need traffic lights here. This is a terrible road,” he said.

JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers explained that the entity was aware of the safety concerns of residents regarding the intersection. “We are committed to providing quality roads that are accessible, safe, and liveable for our communities,” she explained.

According to JRA, the intersection would receive a geometric upgrade within this financial year with the intention to install a traffic signal and construct exclusive turning lanes.

“The Traffic Engineering Department has already completed the signal design and geometric upgrades are due to be undertaken. In the interim we request motorists to be patient and adhere to the rules of the road,” she concluded.

JMPD spokesperson Edna Mamonyane explained that it depends on the traffic flow, especially during peak hours, if they should deploy traffic police to monitor the intersection.

“Normally, there would be traffic control, especially, during peak hours,” she explained.

She said she would check with the accidents offices and trace a record of accidents that occurred in the past few months. “Normally, when it is just damage to the vehicle I may not be aware of that since motorists usually report accidents to the police,” she concluded.
