HONEYDEW – Margaret and Lambert Gehrmann from Honeydew celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

Margaret (81) and Lambert Gehrmann (81) from Honeydew celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on 25 November. Daughter, Regina Smit said the couple immigrated from Germany in 1955 and got married in South Africa in the same year. “My parents left Germany shortly after the second world war and then got married the day after my father’s 21st birthday,” said Smit. She said Margaret and Lambert moved from Muldersdrift to a plot in Honeydew in 1960 where they are still living today.

“When we first moved to Honeydew there was no electricity or water and all of the roads were gravel roads. We had to fetch water from a river close by,” said Lambert. The couple are the proud parents of five daughters, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Smit said her greatest memory of her childhood is her mother looking after the five girls when they all had chickenpox at the same time. The couple share a great love for nature and used to go on regular hunting trips when they were younger. Smit added that Margaret loves watching TV and Lambert loves carpentry. “My father used to be a carpenter when he was still fit to work. Now he does it as a hobby and still finds great pride in showing off his skills,” said Smit. The two love birds celebrated their anniversary on 28 November on their plot together with 32 other family members and friends.
