Teachers take part in chess tournament

JOBURG –Teachers from the Tsogo Sun Moves for Life take part in Chess Teacher Tournaments and Award Ceremonies.

More than 200 maths teachers took part in the 2015 Chess Teacher Tournaments and Award Ceremonies from 20 to 23 October at the groups three sponsoring casinos: Gold Reef City, Silverstar Casino and Montecasino.

Public Relations manager Richmond Sajini said the teachers from various disadvantaged schools across Gauteng form part of the The Tsogo Sun Moves for Life (TSMFL) .

Sajini said the TSMFL Chess programme reaches more than 10 000 learners from Grade R to matric yearly.

Tsogo Sun’s head of CSI Shanda Paine said Tsogo Sun is delighted about the success of the TSMFL chess programme.

“This year several of our learners took part in the SA Junior Chess Championships that was held in Kimberly and some did very well.” But the success is not only rated by the children but also by the number of teachers who get a chance to become master maths teachers.

Paine said the teacher tournaments and award ceremonies were held in recognition of the TSML educators.

“We wanted to honour the educators for their dedication and hard work towards the programme,”said Paine.

Paine further said that the tournaments were also held so that the teachers could show off their chess knowledge.

She said during the teachers who have completed their MiniChess level 1 received a certificate and others received awards for their in-class chess programmes.

Paine concluded by saying the feedback from educators and learners have proven the TSML programme to be a success.

“Several educators admitted to being wary of the programme at first because they didn’t know the game of chess, but they overcame that as the TSMFL tutors and trainers consistently helped them gain an understanding of the game and a confidence in the programme,”said Paine.
