Pick n Pay claims object was not an insect

FAIRLAND – Pick n Pay believe they have debunked the finding of an insect in one of their products.

Pick n Pay said that an object found in one of their products was not an insect. Resident Perrine Williams claimed to have purchased a coconut snack from Pick n Pay, Worldwear Shopping Centre, Fairland, on 7 September. She stated that once she had begun consuming the product she noticed what appeared to be a small insect in the packaging. Williams said, “Imagine my disgust and disappoint[ment] when I reached home and discovered [the alleged insect] in the product.”

Williams said, “[The management staff at the branch] were equally appalled at what did appear to be a small insect (clear pic with antennae) and a [second] unidentifiable object in the product.”

Pick n Pay denied that either of the two items were insects. Cindy Jenks, general manager, technical division at Pick n Pay, stated, “We have been in contact with our customer. When the coconut snack tub was returned to us it was sent to a pest control company to identify the alleged insect in the tub of coconut. It was found that the one foreign object found in the coconut was in fact a small piece of coconut husk, and not part of an insect as the customer first thought. This was communicated to her. There was also a piece of coconut that was found to have started to deteriorate in the tub, but this was a natural process after the product had been opened and taken back to the store. We apologised to our customer and will communicate the final findings of the tests to her.”

Williams wished to state that she was not seeking monetary remuneration but rather an acknowledgement of the problem.
