Is World Rhino day effective?

JOBURG – From the dust of mother Africa our horn tipped mammal needs all the support they can get.

What does World Rhino Day mean to you?

According to the World Rhino Day website, World Rhino Day was first announced by WWF-South Africa in 2010. The day gained international success and recognition due to two women, Lisa Jane of Chishakwe Ranch in Zimbabwe and Rhishja, a blogger . Together these two formidable women made the day one of celebration for all five species of rhino.

Ainsley Hay of the NSPCA Wildlife Protection unit commented on the effectiveness of this initiative. “As much awareness as we can get for the plight of the rhino is great. It is vital for all decision makers and government to look holistically at a variety of solutions to stop poaching.”

Hay continued to say, “We firmly believe that the proposed legalisation of the trade of rhino horn will not solve the problem.”

Co-owner of the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve in Krugersdorp, Ed Herd commented, “Even with days like this, the poaching continues. It [the day] is certainly not effective. We need to curb the demand of rhino horn.” He added, “We inject the horn with a substance that devalues the horn. Much like the dye used for bank notes. Once the horn is ground up it turns a certain colour which makes it worthless.”

What ideas do you have to curb the poaching of rhinos?
