Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital honors pharmacists

WILGEHEUWEL – Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital celebrates Pharmacy Week placing focus on chronic illnesses.

Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital will be celebrating National Pharmacy Week from 1 to 8 September. It will focus on the theme Chronic Disease Take Control, by hosting educational seminars for hospital staff, as well as giving the opportunity to the public to test blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

On 1 September Ampath laboratories will host free cholesterol tests and on 2 September Lancet laboratories will host free blood sugar tests at the entrance of the Wilgeheuwel Hospital. This is for all residents, whether they have medical aid or not.

Senior pharmacist of the hospital Bella du Toit said National Pharmacy Week, initiated by the National Pharmacy Council is celebrated yearly across South Africa in order to praise pharmacists for their input.

“Pharmacists’ involvement helps citizens achieve and maintain their health as well as improve their quality of life,” said Du Toit.

She said the hospital decided on chronic diseases as this year’s theme as it is a condition that needs to be emphasised.

She explained chronic diseases include high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, arthritis and epilepsy.

“A chronic disease is a long-lasting condition that cannot be cured but managed,” said du Toit

She explained that chronic conditions can by managed through the correct diet, exercise, drinking water, reducing salt intake and by avoiding the intake of substances.

She also said medicine must be used accordingly

Du Toit closed off by stating the public should make use of pharmacists’ knowledge when they are uncertain about any medication and the use thereof.
