Crime trends in Honeydew Sector 1

BOSKRUIN – Watch out for a developing trend of criminals following residents to their homes.

Six incidents of vehicle hijackings were reported in Honeydew Sector 1 in the month of July. The same number of incidents occurred in the same month last year.

This was revealed by Honeydew Sector 1 manager Warrant Officer Gabriel Nonyane when he delivered the crime statistics to the Community Policing Forum (CPF).

The Sector 1 CPF meeting was held on 17 August at The Barn Christian Fellowship in Boskruin.

“Crimes of business burglaries and robberies were reported mostly in Randpark Ridge, followed by Northwold, Sundowner and Northgate,” explained WO Nonyane.

He further said that security companies were helpful in the fight against crime. “The rate of crime decreases when we are working with the security companies,” he concluded.

The CPF secretary Joanne Bubb explained that in Golden Harvest where she resides, at least four incidents of house breaking were reported within a week. “These people wait for load shedding and in the midst of darkness, they will then cut the wire and jump over the wall,” she said.

The CPF acting chairperson Roger Costopoulos encouraged resident associations in the sector to buy batteries that would back up their residential complexes during load shedding.

“Speak to your Resident’s Association. Buy those batteries and always check if they are working,” he said.

Greg Pearce from Community Support Services indicated that there was a developing crime trend where robbers follow residents from shopping centres to their homes.

“Always check who is travelling behind you, especially when you live near those shopping centres,” concluded Pearce.

Details: Honeydew Sector 1 CPF 011 801 8576.
