Maragon indoor hockey rewrites history

RUIMSIG – Maragon Private Schools' U13 hockey girls recently won the hockey festival.

The Maragon Private Schools’ U13 hockey girls took part in the prestigious St Andrews School for Girls hockey festival recently.

The festival format is an 8-a-side cross pool play off, where the winners of Pool A and B play the runners-up.

There were 12 other primary schools at the festival competing for the coveted trophy.

The first game was played against the hosting school St Andrews School for Girls which ended in a 0–0 draw.

Maragon beat Bedfordview Primary School 7–0, they also beat Die Ruiter Primary School 6–0 and beat Hurleyvale Primary School 2–0 and finally drew against St Dominics Primary school 0–0.

These results placed Maragon second in Pool A and St Andrews first.

In the semi-finals, Maragon played against President Steyn Hoërskool and the result at the end of full time was 1–1.

Being a semi-final, penalty flicks was the next step. This went to sudden death with Maragon eventually winning 9–8.

This placed Maragon in the finals against their hosts St Andrews.

At the end of full time, the result was a draw of 1–1 and Maragon girls had to once more endure penalty flicks.

They eventually won 3–1.

This trophy has been dominated by St Andrews with only President Steyn Primary school winning it twice before.

However, during the tournament this was all changed and history was rewritten.

The festival ended on a high note with the Maragon U13 hockey girls being the victors.

Each player received a gold medal and the school name was engraved on the floating trophy for 2015.
