SASSA replaces 100 000 cards in a month

BRAAMFONTEIN – SASSA replaces more than 100 000 beneficiaries’ cards within a period of month.

South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is faced with the challenge of beneficiaries applying for replacement of payment cards every month.

The agency replaces at least 100 000 cards per month throughout the country, according to the agency’s Gauteng regional manager Themba Matlou.

He was addressing the media at Parktonian Hotel in Braamfontein on 21 July. “It is either those cards were given to loan sharks by beneficiaries who rely on money lenders, or lost. We are not sure,” he said.

The agency held the media engagement session to introduce some of its managers in Gauteng to media, and thereby strengthen communication. “SASSA deals with most people who are on the ground and are more vulnerable, hence it is important to intensify and strengthen our relationship,” he said.

He explained the agency has initiated a strategy of curbing fraud within the organisation and investigating possible syndicates who were robbing beneficiaries of their money. According to Matlou, the Ekurhuleni district was the main hotspot faced with this severe challenge. “Our objective is to reduce corruption run by external syndicates. We have to deal with it internally as well,” he said.

One of the agency’s officials, Teleni Ntabeni indicated that all services at the agency were offered for free. “Beneficiaries need only to submit their documentation so that we can assist them,” she concluded.

Details: SASSA Gauteng 011 241 8559.
