GALLERY: Roots for growth in Kya Sand

KYA SAND – Judah Africa Community Development creates a city within a city at Kya Sand Pipeline Informal Settlement.

The community of Pipeline Informal Settlement worked in unity with Judah Africa Community Development (JACD) on 17-18 July.

It was an amazing sight when informal settlement residents, Douglasdale Police and volunteers came together to create a better environment for the community on Mandela Day.

Carla-Lee Kamp of Judah Africa Community Development said, “We have been working here well before Mandela Day to create a city within a city, and to better the lives of everyone who lives here.”

The JACD has worked with community leaders to revamp the vegetable garden. This will serve as a source of income and community upliftment.

Jacques Vlok is the ecomonic development coordinator at Umzizi. He and the leaders in the community have taken it upon themselves to create a sustainable, organically grown vegetable garden. “We are teaching them new and improved techniques farming techniques, which can be used to then sell the produce,” said Vlok.

Among the many volunteers that arrived from 17 July to 18 July, the Douglasdale Police have shown considerable participation.

JACD has numerous projects that are ongoing in the community such as a school, crèche, vegetable garden, a clinic and a soccer pitch. “In the spirit of the great Madiba, we are here to show the greater community that any small amount of work can make a huge difference,” said Kamp.
