City of Joburg talks community safety

ZANDSPRUIT — Community members learn about safety from the pros.

The City of Joburg Library and Information Services with the Roodepoort Library hosted a one-of-a-kind safety programme on 8 July at Lufuno lwa Mudzimu Early Childhood Development Centre hall in Zandspruit.

The hall was packed to capacity and overflowing as residents came out in support of the programme. Residents even requested for similar programmes to be introduced and increased.

“Our target group was four- to15-years olds, and members of the community. We also have Johannesburg Roads Agency, JMPD and Community Safety Police participating in some of the programmes,” said librarian Monica Ramabulana and Bongiwe Ncobela, who planned the programme.

The climax of the programme was reached during puppet and magic shows. However, these came as a supplement to an educational session by JRA which taught road safety. Community Safety Police also emphasised about safety in the community together with JMPD.

The children were given snack hampers and a colouring book with crayons as the day progressed to keep learning in a fun way. The impact of the programme was apparent when a young participant alluded to the fact that it was highly educational, especially with the lessons they received to take care of themselves and their siblings.
