With reference to the article titled ‘Restricting Smashers’ on 10 April 2015 I would like to say how hugely pleased and impressed I am by the proactive behaviour of all involved in keeping an eye on certain crime hot spots in our area during certain times of the day. The initiative was started by Beagle on Rugby Road, I believe, but I commend Mr Greg Pearce and all the security companies who are supporting this endeavour and transformed it into a

meaningful collective exercise.

In terms of crime us residents are pretty much left to our own devices, and do what we can on an individual level to secure our properties and our lives in general. There are, however, times and places where one becomes a potential victim, regardless of the preventative measures you have put in place. These hot spot intersections represent such areas. I have been smashed on the Rugby Road corner many years ago, and I remember the helpless feeling coming over me as I watched the criminal smash his way through all the cars in front of me at the robot until he got to smashing my window too.

No preventative notion on my part would have prevented that, and on a daily basis we are all in situations like that. This is why the current initiative under the apparent leadership of the Honeydew Sector 1 Policing Forum is truly a gift. I hope the security companies involved obtain worthwhile marketing and commercial mileage out of the exercise, as they deserve.

I also hope those security companies who are not on board yet will be roped in soon so that all our hot spots become sorry spots for the criminals. As a 30-year paying member of one of the companies involved, I am very happy to see my money work for me in this way too. Well done to all involved!
