Eyeless Pekinese gets home

ROODEPOORT – Abandoned Pekinese finally sees a happy ending and a bright new start.

A recently abandoned dog received a new lease on life when she was adopted after a horrific ordeal.

A Pekinese was brought to the Roodepoort SPCA Hospital by her owner on 27 January with an eye prolapse (this breed of dogs have very shallow eye sockets and large eyes, making it possible for the eyeball to pop out of its socket).

Manager at the Roodepoort SPCA Mandi Cattanach and principal veterinarian and hospital manager Dr Maudy Takawira explained, “It is common for members of the public to come into the SPCA hospital and pose as caring pet owners, but once they are told that our services are not free, but rather for a minimal charge, they abandon their pets. The responsibility falls once again on the SPCA; we treat the pet and once they are fit and healthy we find a good caring new family for the once abandoned pet.”

She was admitted to the hospital as she needed urgent treatment.

Unfortunately, it soon became apparent that the vets would not be able to save her eye and, consequently, it needed to be removed.

When the SPCA Roodepoort tried to contact her owner they realised that they had been given incorrect contact details. To make matters worse, the owner also failed to come back to the hospital to check on the dog.

The SPCA carried out the eye removal regardless and she was also sterilised. Following ongoing treatment in the hospital, she responded very well.

After 21 days since the date she was admitted, she was officially declared abandoned and, having fully recovered, she was transferred to the kennels, where she went up for adoption.

“We are delighted to say that she has found her forever home. Her new owner collected her on 6 March, and we trust that she will be very happy and thrive in her new loving home,” said secretary to the management committee of the SPCA Roodepoort, Claire Mitchell.

Cattanach and Takawira concluded that, “All our abandoned pets have found good homes”.

Dr Takawira added,“Thanks to the assistance of the public, we manage to take care of and feed these abandoned pets.”
