Roodepoort resident wins Brain of 702

ROODEPOORT — Hennie du Plessis walks off with the prize money and gears up for the next round.

Florida Park resident HenniE du Plessis is beaming with excitement after he walked away with R5 000 from the second quarter finals of the Dis-Chem Brain of 702.

Du Plessis and five other contestants competed at the Mall activation at the Glen on 14 February. With 90 seconds on the clock, the contestants had to answer 25 questions from quizmaster Stephen Grootes.

“It was quite tough. I have been to the sudden death round before and I was very happy to win.”

Du Plessis said he enters the competition every year and enjoys the challenge but admits that the money is always nice. The annual competition gives those with a brilliant bank of general knowledge a chance to cash in and show off, both on-air and in front of a live audience at the weekly mall activations.

The nerve-wracking sudden death round was exhilarating for spectators, players and the judges. Contestants and spectators also got the chance to meet their favourite 702 presenters, including Sam Cowen and traffic presenter Aki Anastasiou.

Hennie said from here, it is to the last quarter final in Sandton City where they will compete for a spot in the semi-finals.

“If you think you have reasonable general knowledge, you should definitely do it. You get a lucky set of questions. There have been moments when I got questions that I knew answers to and sometimes that was not the case. Just remember, if you don’t play, you don’t win.”

The Brains of the Day from Monday to Friday gather at a shopping centre on Saturday, where they are joined by a Wildcard contestant, chosen at the centre in a final round of quizzing that is open to anyone who comes to the activation. From these six finalists, one winner each week earns an additional R5 000 and goes forward into the semi-final which will be held on Saturday 28 February.

As for what Du Plessis will do with his winnings? “Straight into savings,” is his answer.
