ROODEPOORT – Psoriasis is a rare condition that often goes untreated and affects about three per cent of adults.

Dr Judy Wallace, chairperson of the South African Psoriasis Association, said the condition has a lot of stigma attached to it.

“This skin disease has a terrible impact on people’s quality of life. And the sad thing is that it can be very successfully treated if it is properly diagnosed – but many people either don’t seek treatment or, if they do, don’t always get the appropriate treatment.”

Psoriasis commonly begins in teenage and early adult years, and tends to remain throughout life, although it can go into remission. According to Wallace, there is a genetic link to the disease.

The condition is caused by abnormal cells that cause blood vessels, skin cells and nerves to grow faster than usual. The result is clearly demarcated patches of thick, red skin covered with white or silver scales.

“One out of four people with psoriasis develop associated arthritis that is characterised by joint pain and inflammation. The arthritis is progressive and when left untreated, can result in deformity.” She added that it can set up a vicious cycle where anxiety and psychological distress increase that could cause the condition to worsen.

Fear not, the good doctor assures sufferers that treatment is available. It depends on sensitivity and the type of psoriasis.
