Sables perform well at Gauteng Districts Challenge

RUIMSIG – Sables bowlers battle it out at the Gauteng Districts Challenge, despite the rainy weather.

The sport of bowls has one purpose and that’s to roll the ball as close to a little white ball called a ‘jack’. This was the number one focus of bowlers who took part in the Gauteng Districts Challenge on 17 and 18 January.

Sables Bowling Association member Graeme Morton said that the competition’s name was changed to Gauteng Districts Challenge because five districts took part in the completion. “The competition included teams from Sables Bowling Association, Johannesburg Bowling Association, Bowls Gauteng North, Ekurhuleni Bowls and Sedibeng Bowls that took part at three venues: Ruimsig Bowling Club, Discovery Bowling Club and Florida North Bowling Club.”

He added that the senior men and women played it out at Ruimsig Bowling Club and the open men and women’s tournament took place at Discovery Bowling Club, followed by the B-group men and women that played at Florida North Bowling Club.

The Sables District Secretary Sandra Viljoen explained that bowlers from Sables performed extremely well. “Sables took first place in the open ladies’ tournament and three third places in the ‘B’ men’s, senior men’s and senior ladies’ divisions.

“I have to thank the Sables bowlers for keeping our name high and all of the spectators that came out in numbers to support the bowlers in the rainy weather,” concluded Viljoen.
