Michele Mulder takes on South African fashion

HONEYDEW – Meet South African model Michele Mulder and see the fashion world from the inside.

Michele Mulder represents young aspiring models throughout South Africa to reach for their dreams.

Mulder (21), has had a young start in the modelling world.

Going to school at St Catherine’s Convent, she started her career by participating in pageants from the tender age of 16 in 2010.

From there she developed her expertise in fashion and entered Miss Teen World 2010, in the same year and ranked in the Top 20.

Studying a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion at the Lisof School, Mulder entered into Miss South Africa in 2012, and she was part of the Top 16. Mulder suggests to the youth, ”In order to be as successful as possible in the modelling world you need to start early. A models’ career is highly limited with a ‘sell by date’ being in their mid-20s.”

In South Africa, Mulder reckons, gaining experience is a must.

As a high-fashion model, she is moving her career to Cape Town in January 2015.

When asked why Cape Town, she replied, ”Cape Town has a much larger international market. Through September to April, big international clients descend upon the city to launch major campaigns.”

According to her, Joburg focuses on ethnic urban markets whereas Cape Town has a considerable larger tap into European markets.

Her hopes are to launch her career in 2015 with major local campaigns in Cape Town from where she will then move to Hong Kong.

”Hong Kong and India invest highly in the career of models, it is where you can grow and nurture your talent.”

The South African fashion industry allows for a more lenient range in regards to model sizes (height and weight).

In Mulder’s spare time she enjoys cooking as she leads a Vegan lifestyle.

Art and crafts allow her to express her creative side.

Yoga helps her keep fit and remain humble.
