Day 3: Its all about the rhinos

ROODEPOORT – Second last day and over the 100 kilometers covered and Myburgh still feels fresh and ready for the last leg of the journey.

Day 3 of the Walk for Rhinos project ended a bit earlier as Francois Myburgh began his third leg of the journey at around 4am. “The heat is one of my biggest problems as it dehydrates you and slows you down, so I decided to leave the backpackers as early as possible.”

Myburgh set his sights on Hartbeespoort about 20km from the R511 after he had travelled from Witpoortjie to Sandton on day 1 and from Sandton to his sleepover spot for the night next to the R511 close to the Hennops River on day 2. “This leg was slightly shorter as I only had to walk about 18km to my next sleepover spot so I was optimistic about the day ahead.”

He explained that the purpose of his Walk for Rhinos is to ultimately raise R100 000 for the conservation of rhinos. “This year so far about 900 rhinos have been poached for their horns and if this trend continues our rhinos might become extinct.”

“I am not sure of how much we have managed to collect so far but I urge people to donate and support my cause.”

Myburgh said, “The support from people has been amazing and wherever I go people keep on stopping me to chat and ask me about what I’m doing; it spurs me on and motivates me and I want to thank everyone that has been part of my journey thus far.”

He was relieved when he arrived at his destination at about 2pm. “I had a bit of extra time to relax my tired legs before the last and longest leg of the trip.”
