A community united for good

RUIMSIG — Sarda's open day on Saturday proved the strength of a community united for the good of others.

Stalls selling anything and everything greeted everyone that joined in the fun at The South Africans Riding for the Disabled (Sarda) offices in Ruimsig for their much-anticipated open day.

On 1 November, community members – young and old – gathered at the ranches for a day of entertainment and indulging in sweet treats, all for a good cause.

Local business has set up stalls around the open area and catered for everyone. From the gardening enthusiasts to the bookworms, there was certainly everything for everyone.

Down by the open field, the pupils from the St Vincent School for the Deaf, took part in a few fun horseriding lessons to the pleasure of the spectators. An obstacle course was set up and that allowed the children to show off exactly how stimulating horseriding can be, both mentally and physically.

Sarda’s branch secretary in Gauteng, Julia Morris said, “It has been a fun-filled day and we are very impressed with the turn out. We had a great deal of help from the local businesses. Proceeds obviously go towards the centre and its facilities. The community really came out to make the day a success.”

The open day went toward raising funds for the organisation of the daily upkeep of the horses and donkeys. Whether it was arts and crafts, yummy homemade pastries or books that attracted everyone, every penny raised went to a good cause.

The NGO relies solely on donations from businesses and community members to maintain the property and animals. Volunteers from the community help with the daily upkeep of the place and work towards therapeutic riding for disabled children and adults.
