Tips to see if your dog is poisoned

ROODEPOORT – Honeydew Police urge residents to be vigilant and to listen when their dogs are barking as it might be an attempt to poison their dogs.

Dog poisoning is prevalent in various suburbs across Roodepoort where criminals are targeting animals to make it easier for them to break into houses.

Frik van Zyl from the West Suburbs Neighbourhood Watch in Roodepoort explained that residents should look out for the following signs,“If your dog is vomiting and is busy hyperventilating or having seizures and has temporary paralysis then the chances are good that the animal has been poisoned.”

He explained that criminals use Temik, also known as ‘two step’, and it can be identified as tiny black or bluish granules similar to gunpowder. “If you notice unfamiliar objects that might seem interesting to your dogs – be it food or not – then you should immediately investigate and remove it.”

He added that you should immediately take the animal away from the object and phone the vet to let them know you are on your way. “Criminals are always a step ahead and these poisonings rarely happen on their own as they are always connected to crime or preparations for further criminal activities. Alert the police and your security company of the situation before you leave your house to take the pet to the veterinarian.”

Honeydew spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said residents should be on the lookout for suspicious people outside their homes and if they suspect anything they should phone the police immediately. She concluded, “If your dogs are barking, or too quiet for too long, go outside and monitor to see what’s going on.”
