Maragon cricket team’s winning streak cut short in final clash

RUIMSIG— Maragon's boys sweep through the Central-West Cricket Leagues and deliver impressive wins.

Maragon Primary’s first cricket team has a lot to celebrate after their recent 51-run win against RAM at the Central-West Night League.

The boys continued their winning streak when they faced off against the Panorama team, securing a 102-run victory and one team member Anthony Davies was applauded as Man of the Match. The two wins ultimately secured the Maragon team a spot in the semi-final section of the league.

This is not the first time the boys land themselves a spot in the Central-West team – in 2011, more than 30 players from the U9 to U13 made the Central-West teams, with five players qualifying for the Gauteng team and their recent winnings proved just why they belong in the final.

Keagan van der Merwe, who is captain of the U13 squad said, “It is a great achievement for all of us and it just goes to show that hard work pays off. We train on Fridays and Saturdays and we were looking forward to the games for a long time.”

The first team swept through the semi-finals leg, delivering a two-wicket blow to Roodekrans, a win that advanced them to the finals of the competition.

All good things come to an end and the better team won when the Maragon team met with the Laerskool Dr Havinga team, who ultimately clinched the victory.

Kelvin Bekker, proud cricket coach at Maragon said, “We are very proud of the representatives from our school. We have a variety from all the age groups and they are doing very well for the school. They played very well throughout the tournament.”
