Greenbelts form hiding place for criminals

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Residents urged to be vigilant after a couple of attempted house break-ins in the open area close to the greenbelt.

Residents who live close to the greenbelts face an uphill battle with opportunistic criminals hiding away in the tall grass and bushes with the intent of breaking into the residential properties close to the belts.

Riverwel Resident’s Association committee member Neville Burnett explained that various incidents took place on 14 October where criminals tried to break into properties across the greenbelt. He said, “Luckily they have been unsuccessful as Best Secure was fast to respond to the incidents.”

Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin said, one of the problems is that the grass is not trimmed and this makes it easier for criminals to hide away in the bushes. “I have logged a complaint to City Parks about the greenbelts and requested that they come and cut the grass.”

Burnett shared a couple of tips that residents should follow to ensure the safety of them and their families:

l When dogs are barking continuously, check what they are barking at and if you suspect any suspicious activities, call your security company.

l Please ensure that your alarm is activated before you go to bed.

l Never confront the criminals as they may be armed – this is something that should be left to your security company or the police.
