Child abuser ordered to undergo mental observation

ROODEPOORT— The man accused of beating and abusing has been ordered to undergo 30 days of mental observation, following reports of a mental psychotic episode.

ROODEPOORT – The Roodepoort man accused of beating his three year old daughter to a pulp appeared at the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on 29 August, where he was ordered to go for mental evaluation.

The accused’s attorney said the man had recently been discharged from Leratong Hospital, where he received narcosis treatment for epilepsy.

According to his defence team, the man has suffered from the condition since his childhood and has frequent hallucinations.

Left untreated, epilepsy can cause the person suffering from it to lose control in a fit of rage and become incredibly aggressive, leading to a mental psychotic disorder.

The magistrate ordered the accused check into the Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital for 30 days.

He will be at the prison pending the availability of a bed at the hospital and would remain at the hospital for the duration of his mental observation.

According to Honeydew police spokesperson Karen Jacobs, the man’s three-year-old daughter was rescued by passer-by Robert Sadiki, who noticed the accused allegedly bang the child’s head against the wall before he kicked and strangled her.

Sadiki has since received a Lead SA hero award after word spread about his heroic gesture.
