Adopt a furry friend this winter

ROODEPOORT – The SPCA has dogs available for adoption, in time for the cold chills.

Roodepoort SPCA has a large selection of animals up for adoption in time for winter this week.

SPCA Manager Mandy Cattanach said people can pop in during the week or on Saturdays. “Prospective owners may bring along their dogs for a compatibility match with a dog that they want to adopt from the SPCA. We are open on Saturdays as well and the entire family can visit our lovely collection of animals we have available”.

She explained that before an adoption can take place a pre-home inspection needs to be conducted. “During this inspection, we take a look at the house and yard where the animal will be staying and if it’s safe for the animal to stay there. We also take a look at how the other animals are looked after and if there is enough food and sufficient shelter for them, be it a dog-house. Owners should also be aware that sterilisation and de-worming are compulsory and are included in the fee when adopting an animal.”

She added that in the event where owners no longer want the animal, they should not dump it and expect someone to pick it up. “This seldom happens as no one ever picks up the animals and they are never found again in some cases. If you don’t want your pet any longer then you should bring it in to the SPCA and donate it to us, as it will then at least be given a chance to be adopted by suitable owners.”

She said adoption is an easy process as one only needs to sign over the animal to the organisation by completing a form, and the animal will immediately be available for adoption.
