New water pipes for Ward 126

WELTEVREDEN PARK - Ward 126's ageing water pipes will receive a much-needed upgrade.

Water articulation remains a problem in various Johannesburg suburbs.

According to Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin, the original water pipes installed 20 to 30 years ago are unable to cope with the daily high volume water consumption.

Due to excessive pressure, incidences of burst water pipes occur almost weekly in Ward 126.

“The City of Johannesburg has come up with a solution to the big problem faced by residents on a regular basis. A project was started this week in conjunction with Johannesburg Water where the entire water articulation system will be spruced up,” Tonkin said.

He added that all of the pipes will be replaced with new ones that are larger in diameter and will reduce water bursts in his ward.

With a big project like this, residents need to take into account that pavements and driveways will have to be dug up and Tonkin said that this will frustrate residents the most.

“Residents need to be calm and understand that this will take time and it will slow down traffic in certain areas. But it will only last three to four months and then burst water pipes will be a thing of the past.”

Four base sites will also be set up, with two in Without Avenue and the other two in Ouhout Avenue.

“These base sites will each have a kitchen and toilet, and will serve as a gathering point for the workers who have to work on the pipes. So I urge residents to assist these workers and co-operate with them.”
