Use water wisely

JOBURG - Tips from Rand Water on how to save water around your home.

South Africa is classified as a water-stressed country, with a very high evaporation rate and fluctuating periods of floods and droughts. We all need to work together to save water. Using less water reduces your personal expenses, so why not work towards a water wise future with these tips?

  • Insulate water pipes and geyser.
  • Front loading washing machines are more water and energy efficient than top loaders of twin tubs.
  • Place a 0.5 L bottle filled with water in your toilet cistern to reduce the amount of water used per flush.
  • Use cold water to wash your hands instead of hot water.
  • Place a bucket in your shower to collect the used water which you can reuse on lawns, shrubs and trees.
  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, shaving and washing your hair.
  • Thaw frozen food in a refrigerator or a bowl of water instead of using running water.
  • When boiling water on the stove cover the pot with a lid.
  • Only put as much water into your kettle as you need.
