Poster boys could be in trouble

ROODEPOORT - Residents urged to contact police if they spot perpetrators.

Illegal signs are a big problem in Gauteng and bylaws that prohibit these signs from being erected on a regular basis need to be enforced.

Florida Glen resident Ernie Bates said while driving through his suburb there were countless posters that casual workers had put on streetlight pole advertising their services.

“I do not have a problem with people who are on the lookout for jobs, but I tend to be a little cautious and would not phone any of those workers to do a casual job around the home for me,” he said.

Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said his department were busy planning a raid to remove the illegal posters in conjunction with workers from Johannesburg Roads Agency.

“These illegal signs and posters seem to appear more in the West Rand then any other area in Johannesburg,” said Minnaar. “If we catch anybody that’s involved with erecting any illegal signs they will be arrested on the spot. We urge residents to contact the Metro police bylaw call centre if they see any illegal signs being erected.” He added that the numbers displayed on the posters were not those of the people that put up these posters because it was easier for them to dodge the police that way. Master Builders South Africa (MBA) Operations Director Pierre Fourie mentioned that people need to research builders before they hire them. He said, “Reliable builders whether commercial or domestic, large or small, can be found on our website and it will show you more info about the MBA’s members.”
