No light, no sight

Christiaan De Wet Road a safety and crime hazard

According to Marlene Coetzee of Constantia Kloof, there is no joy in driving on Christiaan de Wet Road.

She maintains the streetlights have been out for over six months. “That road is just too dark at night,” she said, referring to the stretch of road from Hendrik Potgieter to Jim Fouché.

Coetzee is appalled by the city council’s apparent neglect. “So many lives have been lost on that road; it should be at the top of their priority list that the road is in a good condition at all times.”

In addition, crime is also a concern as the darkness provides an opportunity for smash and grabs. “Council should also do something to fight crime, they shouldn’t leave everything in the hands of the police. Fixing streetlights will be their bit towards fighting crime.”

Ward councillor of the area Carl Mann said he was made aware of the situation by a community member and he has logged a call with Solomon Bhengu of City Power.

At the time of going to press City Power had not responded to queries sent to them.
