Bikers ride for charity

More than 5800 toys collected for various charities at the annual Santa Run

Early on the morning of 24 November, hundreds of motorcyclists assembled either the West Rand Bikers Church in Roodepoort North, or at the Yamaha Lifestyle Center in Strubens Valley. Bikers adorned their bikes – and themselves – with all sorts of colourful toys and then proceeded to ride en mass towards Cecil Payne Sports Grounds in Maraisburg.

A strange sight indeed, this mass bike ride is known as the Santa Run and all toys adorned by bike and rider are donated to charity.

More than 5800 toys were collected at the sports grounds, which were then distributed to 16 selected beneficiaries, including Angels of Africa – a non-profit organisation which assists orphans in sub-Saharan Africa, the United Cerebral Palsy Association, the Salvation Army, as well as several rural schools.

Motorcycle clubs that took part included the Warlocks, the Messiah Disciples, Taz Devils, Widow’s Sons, Daynight Warriors, Steel Knights, the Roadies, and the Harley Davidson Free Chapter.

After the toys and donations were collected, bikers enjoyed a traditional day of music and relaxation compliments of musicians Clint Cunningham and Ghapi.
