Agape Primary goes green

Students impress with environmentally-friendly designs

Agape Primary school recently hosted their annual science competition themed “Going Green”.

Grade 7 students produced innovative and though-provoking designs and proved just how concerned our younger generation is with environmentally-friendly projects. Christine Allenby created a colourful wind turbine with components she assembled herself. Copper wire was coiled around a plastic tube 500 times and recycled materials, including a neodymium magnet, were used to generate electrical energy to light an LED light.

Kaitlyn van der Merwe produced a water turbine that has the capacity to not only elevate objects through using rope, but to also saw through materials. The design was inspired using mechanical machinery used in ancient times to build Neolithic structures. Joel Peter displayed his water desalinisation device which converts salt water into fresh, drinkable water.

Other students who impressed included Kayla Lawrence, Dinah Forgey, Matthew Hayden, and Megan Diffenthal. “We’re so proud of our students”, said Agape’s science teacher Ignis Van Rooyen.
