Mother of hospitalised Roodepark learner still struggling with aftermath

Mother searching for another school after being left disappointed with outcome

The first weekend of February was rocked by news of a school fight that left one learner of Roodepark School in ICU. The dust has since settled but the mother of the boy who was hospitalised still deals with daily reminders of the traumatic ordeal.

After arriving home from school on the day of the fight, the boy’s mother rushed her son to hospital where doctors diagnosed him with brain hemorrhage. While the boy who dealt the offending blow has since returned to school, his victim remains under supervision. “The doctor said my son’s recovery will take about one year, then he will say if we are in the clear,” the boy’s mom divulged.

She is also on the hunt for another place for her son to finish matric as she feels neglected by Roodepark School. “I am disappointed in how the school has handled the situation with my son. The only contact we had was to attend a hearing and to collect homework,” she claimed. “I believe that the boy who hurt him is back at school and his life goes on as normal.”

The school has again not taken the opportunity to comment but the Gauteng Department of Education believes the matter was dealt with satisfactorily. Spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed the GDE had made recommendations on alternative schools, extended offers of counselling and ensured correct disciplinary procedures were followed.

Initially, accusations around who started the fight were thrown in both directions but at the time of publication the parents of the other boy involved had also declined to comment further. The mother’s overwhelming feeling however, is that the school does not appreciate the magnitude of the incident, claiming, “This has been a horrible ordeal for my son, my daughter and myself. My son was the one that got hurt badly with injuries that could last him through his life.”
