Crime on the increase in the first months of 2020

House robberies and hijackings up since January

Despite police’s best efforts, rampant crime continues in and around the Roodepoort area. Police have been working round the clock and have made numerous arrests but still, the incidents outstrip their reach.

House robberies, business robberies and hijackings have all seen a surge since the start of the year, and police are asking the public to increase their vigilance. Noteworthy incidents include a small-business owner on Payne Street, Witpoortjie who was robbed of 30 boxes of cigarettes and R5 000 cash by four men.

In one of the more brash hijackings, an employee of a car dealership was robbed and abandoned while out on a test drive. Two men were test-driving a vehicle when they ordered the employee out of the car at gunpoint, robbing him of R600 in the process. An elderly person was also the victim of a house robbery on Mimosa Street, Helderkruin when they were robbed of their laptop and a large amount of cash.

Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Juanita Yorke confirmed, “We are experiencing large volumes of crime. We urge the public to take every precaution possible. The public must also be aware of a resurgence of the SIM swap scam. Do not give your phone to anyone on the street.”

The police registered several positive results recently but the battle against criminality is ongoing.
