Illegal firearms recovered after shootout at Maraisburg mine

Illegal miners escape down abandoned shaft when law-enforcers give chase

The rope in the tug of war between illegal miners and authorities inched closer to the side of the law on Thursday, 27 February. Illegal miners and police clashed at the mouth of an illegal mining operation.

Following up on a tip-off, Florida Crime Prevention Unit, Florida Police, Florida CPF and private security companies investigated an abandoned Central Rand Gold mine on the outskirts of Maraisburg. Upon arrival, authorities were met with gunfire and a shootout ensued.

Succumbing to the overwhelming firepower, the illegal miners turned and fled into the shaft with authorities giving chase. Riaz Jogee of the Florida CPF recounted the scene, saying, “The shaft split into three different paths after about 200 metres. It became too dark and dangerous so the pursuit was abandoned.”

Scurrying away in a rush, the illegal miners left behind a valuable arsenal as five illegal weapons were recovered. High-powered rifles, a revolver and a pistol were among the five firearms booked in at Florida Police Station. The illegal miners also left behind over 100 rounds of ammunition for the various firearms.

None of the law-enforcers sustained injuries during this successful operation, and Florida Police spokesperson, Sergeant Mpho More thanked members for their bravery and courage saying, “Thank you to the members and community for a job well done. We will not rest until the zama zamas surrender and Florida becomes a safe area for everyone.”
