For the fourth year running, the Florida Park High School choir treated staff to a light lunch and a heavy dose of swing and soul. Serving up their unique renditions of pop classics and South African favourites, the young musicians had their educators on their feet from the get-go. All in aid of their fundraising attempts, this concert held on Friday 21 February is the second initiative of the year so far.

Using a blend of song and dance to give learners a purpose that keeps them out of trouble, is Arts teacher Wendy Khumalo. She is driving her songbirds in their pursuit of their end goal, a rare trip to KwaZulu-Natal. “Most of these learners have never been to Durban so we would like to take them for the experience, do some team-building and learn some new notes,” Wendy said. “The main thing is it keeps them away from bad things,” she added.

Forgoing the rigid structure of a regular Choral ensemble, the choir embraces a more freestyle approach that allows its members the true freedom to express themselves. They weave traditional drums, heartfelt vocals and high-energy moves to deliver an emotional performance. The smiles and enthusiasm show though that this is not your average school choir but a movement of joyous celebration.
