Generaal Pienaar Avenue and Ham Street intersection claims more scalps

Road users urged to always drive with caution

The notorious series of intersections along Generaal Pienaar Avenue are once again littered with debris. The side streets that cross the popular route have for numerous years been the scene of countless accidents with two more vehicles added to the list on Tuesday, 18 February.

Fortunately no injuries were reported but eye-witnesses claim the accident was clearly avoidable. The witness reports that he was waiting to exit the Engen garage when he spotted the silver Honda heading towards him on Generaal Pienaar from the direction of Albertina Sisulu Road. While waiting for the Honda to pass, a blue Subaru attempted to cross the intersection from the Corlett Avenue end of Ham Street but severely misjudged the distance and speed of the Honda.

The Subaru was stranded and was forcefully clipped by the Honda. The glancing contact was so precise that the Subaru was spun around, completing a full 180 degree pivot. While no injuries were reported, both drivers were visibly shaken and begrudgingly exchanged personal information.

Whether a combination of inappropriate speed, poor judgment of distance or simple impatience, the message is clear to always drive with care and caution.
