Age no barrier to independent living

Retirement villages aiming to promote social interaction

The Witpoortjie community came out in numbers to support the Witpoortjie Retirement Market on Saturday, 16 November. Residents and stall merchants alike had the day to enjoy the sun and community atmosphere.

An assortment of arts and crafts were on show for would-be bargain hunters looking to add to their pile of treasures. The usually peaceful gardens, now teeming with energy, were lined with various food stalls and a raucous beer garden. For those wanting a quieter space, a tea garden serving cake and warm beverages was nestled gently in the corner.

The two sister villages, Zonneveld Village and Witpoortjie Village made up the bulk of the attendees. Developed by the Flower Foundation, the villages aim to promote a spirit of togetherness. Heidi Hirner, speaking for the Flower Foundation, elaborated, “The market presents new residents with an opportunity to meet their neighbours, while the older residents get to socialise.”

Maggie McKey, a resident for three years, described life in the villages, saying, “They are a tranquil and safe place to live. It really is focused on care and a social environment”.

Family and friends mingled around a fresh supply of food and refreshments before retiring to their bungalows for a well-deserved rest. The villages are focused on a ‘continuum of care’ and with well-trained nurses on alert, the residents could afford to let loose for a while.
