URGENT WARNING: SIM swap scam

Report any suspicious incidents immediately.

Roodepoort Police wishes to send out an urgent warning regarding a SIM swap scam which is occurring with increasing regularity in the Roodepoort Central Business District (CBD).

They are asking the public not to accept free cellular SIM card handouts from anyone in the Roodepoort CBD.

Captain Juanita Yorke confirmed, “The culprits will offer you a free SIM card and airtime from all service providers. They then insert the new SIM card into your phone, steal all your personal information and withdraw funds from your banking accounts”. She added, “Protect your information and do not allow anyone to have access to your passwords or private information on your cellphone”.

Several cases have been opened at the Roodepoort Police Station by community members who have had money removed from their banking accounts using this method. The police are asking the public to report any information they may have about these cases to the nearest police station, or call 10111. The public can also anonymously report incidents at 08600 10111.

The Roodepoort Police stressed the need for the public to be vigilant. Captain Yorke concluded, “If anyone had fallen victim to this scam, please open a case at your nearest police station”.
