Sunday the 15th survival guide

Electricity is a huge part of our lives, and there is always a huge panic when we don't have any, so here is a list of a few things you can do to keep yourself entertained during the power interruption on Sunday.

In light of the recent notice that power will be interrupted for eight hours on Sunday, 15 September in Roodepoort, the Record would like to offer you some solutions for the imminent boredom.

1. The outage is set to start at 7am – use this as an opportunity to sleep in; sleep the whole day if you want to. If you are working, at least your boss won’t be able to see you sleeping in the dark, just make sure you don’t snore.

2. Many people worry about the food in their fridge going off when the power goes out. There is a simple solution to this problem: eat it. Invite your friends and family over for a bring-and-braai, or if you want to be alone, just raid the refrigerator by yourself, no one will judge.

3. Dig out the board games or the deck of cards – before the internet, there were board games. It is an entertaining way for the family to bond; as long as you don’t play UNO or Monopoly (those games destroy families and friendships, steer clear if you can).

4. Become one with nature – go for a walk in the park, go outside, throw a ball, play some sport, do something! The fresh air won’t kill you, I promise. The African Bird Fair will be taking place at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden; Kloofendal Nature Reserve is hosting a butterfly walk, and Melville Koppies Nature Reserve is having a three-hour guided hike. (Find details in the printed edition of the Roodepoort Record or Roodepoort Northsider on Thursday, 12 September).

5. Write a letter (for the kids – this is how they texted in the olden days). Take your pen or pencil and put it to paper, write someone a nice letter or draw a picture. The hand-written letters are a bit more formal, but believe it or not, people appreciate the effort.

6. Go on a Wi-Fi hunt – map out the places you have access to which will have electricity (and have free Wi-Fi) and go on a hunt for the best signal. Usually, these places are restaurants so if you have already cleaned out your own fridge as a result of Tip 2, and you’re still hungry, you can eat while you tweet.

7. When in doubt, Boeresport is always entertaining – gather your family, friends, neighbours, and pets for a plethora of exciting games. You can do the classic races (egg-and-spoon race, wheelbarrow race, and sack race); you can play tug-of-war, capture the flag and so many more. Be creative – it’s fun.

8. If all else fails, go buy a generator or just leave Roodepoort for a few hours – simple.
