Accept help only inside the Florida Licensing Station, JMPD warns

Unsuspecting motorists who were looking to either renew their licences or car discs, have cried foul on numerous occasions after visiting the facility.

“We’ve tried to intervene on many occasions by cautioning people to avoid accepting any help from bystanders outside the Florida Licensing Station”.

These were the words of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department ward commander, Superintendent Wandile Mrubata, who reiterated that people should only accept help inside the licensing station to avoid being scammed.

Unsuspecting motorists who were looking to either renew their licences or car discs, have cried foul on numerous occasions after visiting the facility. The latest cry was from a Weltevreden Park resident, Shivien Pillay, who warned residents of bogus tactics taking place at the station after his visit.

“Please be careful of scams at the licensing office in Florida. These guys come to you and try to convince you that they can speed up the process even if you haven’t booked online.

They are very convincing. Please don’t not give your money to anyone outside the licensing office,” he warned.

Mrubata said once the money exchanges hands the hoodlums disappear. When asked why the JMPD isn’t dealing more decisively with the con-artists outside the station, Mrubata said it is not an easy task.

“We’ve held many educational campaigns advising people to avoid accepting ‘help’ from the people outside the licensing station. We’ve told the public not to talk to anyone outside the station because we can’t easily remove them as some claim to own driving schools,” he explained.

He also advised that none of those people can speed up any process within the station. “There is no queue at the station, everything is done via appointments booked online. You’ll probably wait for 30 minutes to be attended to,” he said, also explaining that the facility had an abundance of parking space inside the grounds.
