“It’s an exciting campaign that appeals to all people who want to sing, dance, act, play an instrument or model, or to recognise a loved one or friend that is affected by cancer, and at the same time, help fight cancer by raising funds.”

Those were the words of Maria Scholtz, Head of Sustainability at the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), who is appealing to aspiring performers to come to the Basement Theatre at the Roodepoort Theatre, on Saturday, 10 August, to showcase their talents.

This will be part of the second Socialite 2019 campaign, which is said to have been a success story from the outset.

“This campaign allows participants a platform of exposure to industry-leading brand partners who scout for new talent through CANSA events in their local communities. Entrants can display instrumental, acting, dancing and singing talents in a 90-second audition on a professional stage,” explained a statement from CANSA.

Entrants are urged to supply their ‘backtrack’ or song on a marked USB memory stick.

Maria went on to explain that the campaign offers three age categories in the modelling division for both genders, which are for entrants between the ages of 4 and 19.

For other talents, like singing, dancing and other performing arts, there is a junior division for 7 to 15 year olds, and a senior division, which is an open age category for contestants aged 16 and older.

“Everyone is welcome to enter, and we provide workshops to help equip participants for the final event which will take place at Carnival City in October. Participants learn and grow from the workshop training and some even develop lifelong friendships through this amazing experience,” added Maria.

The performers will also become ambassadors for CANSA and will spread the cancer health awareness message while raising funds to enable CANSA to continue its care and service.

“Top performers from this competition will also be given the opportunity to expand and grow their fan base by performing at other CANSA national events, such as the CANSA Relay For Life, Cuppa For CANSA, CANSA Active and CANSA Shavathon,” concluded the statement.
