Antonio Britto competed in the National Performing Arts competition in March this year and was selected to represent South Africa at Talent America in New York.

The talented piano player from Davidsonville was in America from 23 June to 3 July.

The Grade 10 learner from Hoërskool Roodepoort was awarded first place for his performance, second place for one of his pieces and obtained a Special Award for the Divisional Winner for his age group.

At only 15 years old, Antonio is the master of the piano and this is especially impressive because he only learned to play the instrument two years ago.

Antonio said, “I thought I was not going to make it due to the high cost of the trip. I come from a single parent home and I am one of three children. I want to thank God for this mind-blowing experience and for being right on time. Secondly, I want to thank my mom who is there for me all the time, my grandfather who has been a father figure and my pastor who has been praying for me throughout the course of my trip.”

Antonio’s music teacher, Anneli Malherbe is the one who exposed him to the competition and Talent Africa.

Hoërskool Roodepoort’s Principal, Marina van der Merwe said, “Roodies is very proud of Antonio. He and Godfrey Phaahla are our newsmakers.”

Antonio’s mother, Yulandi Britto said, “I want to thank all the donors who helped my son get to New York. A special big thank goes to the company that sowed a generous seed.”

Antonio also had a recording opportunity with his fellow instrumentalists in the studio that is owned by Dante Lattanzi, CEO of Caelum Productions.
