Residents will wonder if there are holes in their wallets, but it’s actually the latest tariff increases

Eskom is increasing its rates, which will leave residents in more financial distress.

As of today, Monday, 1 July, the cost of living is now higher than it was, due to the increase in municipal rates.

With the newly introduced tariff plan increase, residents now have to restructure their budgets to accommodate the increase. The tariff hikes include Eskom’s increased rates, which will leave residents in even more financial distress. The municipal rates increase in Johannesburg range from water rates to those for refuse removal and property. Even bus commuters are feeling the pinch, with Johannesburg operator Rea Vaya pushing fees up by 7 per cent.

The rate for water has increased by 9,9 per cent, property rates have increased by 5,5 per cent, the electricity rate has increased by 13,07 per cent and refuse removal is up by 7 per cent.

“The tariff hike is something out of the control of the City of Johannesburg. Residents are going through a very difficult time at the moment. Job losses are a contributing factor, but the tariff hikes coming into effect will definitely put a strain on residents,” said City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Herman Mashaba.
