Poorte bounces back with a much-needed win over Pirates

Poorte came to the match knowing very well that they had to step up their game and regain the momentum that was slowed down by Wanderers last week.

Coming back from last week’s defeat, Roto Tank Roodepoort Rugby Club played an away fixture on Saturday, 29 June against Leadhome Pirates Rugby club in Randburg.

It was a full day of rugby, with games from the U/8s right up the 1st team throughout the day.

The return of the two Poorte flanks, Carl Mellet and Astley Spook van Wyk had a positive impact on the visitors as they both contributed with tries on the day.

Poorte started the first half clearly indicating that they were wounded lions, but determined to return home with maximum points.

Flyhalf, Wesley Roberts, and winger, Lux Ntsepe, both scored some well-worked tries for Poorte and defended like demons – as if their lives depended on it.

The Poorte forwards worked hard to secure clean ball for the hands of the flyhalf to distribute good quality balls to his never flat-footed backs.

Pirates proved to be tough opponents for the Roodepoort side as they ran in four tries courtesy of two tries from Armand Steyn and one each from Kewan Gibb and Alex du Plooy.

Poorte won the match with five magnificent tries from the forwards and another two tries from the backs to make the final score of the day 41–24 in favour of the visitors.

The rest of the scores for the fixture were as follows:

– U/19: 63–10 to Roodepoort

– U/21: 52–14 to Roodepoort

– 3rd team: 40–7 to Roodepoort

– 2nd team: 31–26 to Roodepoort

– 1st team: 41–24 to Roodepoort
