According to Ward 71 councillor, René Benjamin, before the project commences, there are still a few requirements that must first be dealt with:

– The power cables that supply the majority of the ward, i.e. the suburb of Witpoortjie, are located on South Road, right where the project is located. This means that these cables will have to be re-routed by City Power prior to the commencement of the project.

“I have communicated with City Power on this matter, as my major concern is the down-time the residents of Witpoortjie will have to endure during the re-routing process. City Power’s plan is to isolate one cable at a time and then move the others so as to prevent any down time. This is the ideal solution to the issue. When this part of the project is ready to be done, we will inform residents,” Rene said.

– She also mentioned that a traffic diversion plan needs to be presented and approved by JRA prior to implementation. Once the plan has been approved, this will also be communicated to the community.

– The project also makes provision for local job creation, including individuals and SMMEs. Rene said that a meeting will be held to discuss this before the project starts.
