Helping the hopeless

The aim is to get more people on board so that more animals could be fed.

Feed-the-Furry has its third drive this Saturday, 18 May, to benefit the 9th Day rescue, rehabilitation and rehome centre.

The non-profit organisation collects food, blankets, clothing and any second-hand goods for animal shelters in need.

This is a monthly initiative whereby donations are used to buy dog food and deliver it to the chosen shelter, based on the number of votes the shelter received on Facebook.

“I decided to start this organisation because of my love of animals. After seeing how many animals are in need in shelters, and how shelters are battling to feed the animals, I wanted to try and help them. It started off with the idea that I would give a shelter 50 kilograms of dog food per month, but that only feeds a few mouths. So I decided to get as many people as possible to donate so that we could feed more,” said Celeste Vermeulen, the founder of the organisation.

“At the moment we are only doing food drives on the West Rand, but we hope to expand to other areas soon. We are also hoping to eventually deliver to more than one shelter a month, based on public support,” she added.

During the first drive, the organisation collected 425 kilograms of dog food, which was donated to the Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW).

“So far we have gathered 253 kilograms of food for the 9th Day rescue, rehabilitation and rehome centre, and we also managed to get a sponsor for their signage, which we will be putting up on Saturday,” Celeste concluded.
