#JusticeForLee: Update: New counsel asks for postponement

'The case was postponed because Onke now has new counsel'

The accused in the case of the missing three-year-old Liyaqat ‘Lee’ Mentoor appeared in the Johannesburg High Court on 1 February.

The 29-year-old Onke Hartin Mashinini, who stands accused of murder, as well as robbery with aggravating circumstances, appeared in court for his pre-trial hearing, but, to the frustration of the family, the case was postponed.

Estelle Delport, the family representative, said, “The reason for the postponement is because Mashinini now has new counsel, and they requested the postponement to be able to prepare for the case.”

She added that, although it was very frustrating, they were very grateful for the fact that the case is now actually moving forward. “When you lose a child and don’t know where he is or what has happened to him, there is no closure, it’s the worst thing ever. Kaylah, the pain you feel as a mom, we feel with you,” she said.

Delport added that the prosecutor advised them that, during Mashinini’s next appearance, a trial date will possibly be set, “We are praying that this will be the case and we will be able to move forward. Once again, I would just like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who keeps on supporting us, it has been phenomenal and kept us going.”

Mashinini will remain in custody until his next appearance on 15 February.
