Four scholar transport vehicles impounded in Florida

This followed an inspection by JMPD and the MMC for Public Safety

Four scholar transport vehicles that transport dozens of school children on a daily basis were impounded by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun and the councillor for Ward 70, Caleb Finn, joined JMPD officers at Unified Primary School to inspect their scholar transport vehicles.

During this inspection, four of these vehicles were impounded due to their unroadworthiness and the dangers they pose.

The vehicles were found to have shocking defects and an array of safety contraventions, including missing wheel nuts, worn tyres, malfunctioning headlights and wiper blades, broken seats and doors, lack of safety belts and expired licence disks.

The inspection formed part of the Department of Public Safety’s ‘Back to School Safety Campaign’, which will be rolled out in all seven regions of the City of Johannesburg (CoJ). Its main focus is ensuring that scholar transport complies with road and safety regulations, so that the safety of the young passengers and other motorists is ensured.

The campaign also aims to ensure that parents, schools and learners are informed on how to choose reliable transport and operators that adhere to safety regulations.

Sun said, “The safety of our children is non-negotiable. We simply cannot allow fly-by-night operators to play with the precious lives of our children. We will ensure the impounded vehicles are only released once the owners have rectified and fixed all the defects.”

During the visit, Sun also met the well-trained and disciplined scholar patrols, and he said, “It was most impressive to see how these young, yet responsible, school children were taking safety very seriously, and were exemplary”.
