Beware the new breathalyser

Results will be printed out on the spot.

Motorists who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs should think again.

The Metro Police have announced on 1 January that henceforth they will use a new-generation breathalyser, which was approved by the Director of Public Prosecution. The machine samples alcohol in the stomach and ignores fumes on the suspect’s breath. One of the benefits of this new technology is that additional blood tests are no longer required, the results of which sometimes took up to two years to reach the courts.

According to Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar, this sophisticated technology will give a printout of the results on the spot, showing all the necessary information such as the culprit’s personal details and the case number. This printout will then go into the dossier. The same procedure, as in the past, will be followed as far as arrests and incarceration are concerned.
